Evenings at Home in Words of One Syllable

Evenings at Home in Words of One Syllable, adapted from John Aikin and Anna Laetitia Barbauld’s classic by Lucy Aikin, was published in 1868. The book begins introducing the reader to Mr. and Mrs. Howe and their family. It is explained that from time-to-time guests arrived at the house and some of them wrote tales and poems. Mrs. Howe collected these stories (31 in total) and kept them in a box and key and let the children pick out the latest to read out loud when they came home from school. Lucy Aikin (a.k.a. Mary Godolphin) transcribed the original work into words of only one syllable that makes this classic accessible to those learning to read as well as those who want a clearer representation of these timeless stories.
