Emma, by Jane Austen, was first published in 1815.   Emma Woodhouse is first described as "handsome, clever, and rich."  Trouble is in Emma's future, though, as the spoiled, headstrong heroine gets into matchmaking troubles and is unable to perceive the dangers of meddling in other people's lives.
