A Study in Scarlet, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, was published in 1887 and was the first Sherlock Holmes novel. As Holmes proclaims to Doctor Watson in the fourth chapter, "There’s the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it.” The story opens when Doctor John Watson, retired from the service due to a war injury, is directed to Sherlock Holmes who is seeking a roommate to share the rent. As the two become acquainted Watson is drawn into the fantastical world of the great detective.
