Sherlock Holmes is sought out by Mary Morstan, who has a mysterious case requiring a solution. Miss Morstan’s father has disappeared a few years past in suspicious fashion. After receiving mysterious annual deliveries of precious pearls she had now just been delivered a letter imploring her to meet with the sender that very night. On their way to the meeting she shows Holmes a map her father had possessed - with the words “the sign of four” written upon it…
