The Adventures of Oliver Twist, by Charles Dickens, was first published in 1838 and was Dickens' second novel. This familiar classic uses the familiar theme of an orphan, Oliver, encountering many difficulties on his path to redemption. Oliver becomes an orphan when his mother dies in childbirth and his father mysteriously disappears. Oliver progresses through the baby farm into the main workhouse, where he toils away with very little food. His adventure takes an unexpected turn as Oliver loses when the boys draw lots to see who would ask for more gruel and he ends up uttering that famous line: "Please, sir, I want some more."
